My curiosity about quilting led me to sign up for a beginners' quilt class at a local sewing machine shop. The teacher was very helpful and the other students were encouraging and inspiring. It only took that one class for me to get hooked on making quilts.

Quilt shops are very friendly places to go and get started. The shop owners and employees are usually all quilters. They all love to help customers, especially beginners, with choosing a class, a pattern, fabric, quilting tools, etc.

Most quilt shops have several classes available to choose from; beginner to advanced. They typically have a sample quilt or quilt block to show you before signing up for a particular class.

After you finish sewing a quilt top, then it's time to purchase the batting, lining, safety pins, and then preparing for the quilting process. That's where you sew the three layers (top, batting, & lining) together to make it a quilt.

Another option to doing the quilting yourself is to hire a Longarm Quilter. A Longarm Quilter quilts with a longarm quilting machine. The typical machine can have between a 24" to 36" arm length, and is mounted on a table that is 10' to 14' long. This allows the three layers of the quilt to lay flat and be rolled onto rollers which keep it taught. The quilter guides the machine around the table on wheels and quilts the quilt. As a longarm quilter, I have batting and lining available for purchase if you don't know which kind to buy, or don't have time.
